Last Year's Rank: 5

Investment Range: Over $1 Million

Category: Restaurant

Company Description

Burger King is the second largest burger chain in the world after McDonald's. Currently the Brazilian investment firm 3G Capital has private ownership, through its subsidiary Restaurant Brands International, having bought the company from partners Bain Capital, Berkshire Hathaway and TPG Capital in 2010. In 2014 3G acquired and merged the Canadian-based Tim Hortons with Burger King.

Burger King uses a number of franchise strategies, including relying on certain regional franchises to sign-on new franchisees on the company's behalf.

At the end of 2015, Burger King reported it had 15,003 outlets in 100 countries. 47.5 of these reside within the United States. About 99.5 percent of global locations are privately owned and operated, as Burger King moved to an almost entirely franchised model in 2013.
