Standing alone as the most recognizable and profitable restaurant chain in history, McDonald’s trademark menu items have made it an icon of American fast food throughout the world. It has been the top earning franchise since Franchise Times began assembling the top 200+ franchise list in 2000.
After 2014’s quarterly sales dropped for the first time in 17 years, McDonald’s planned to close 184 restaurants in 2015. Amidst these struggles, Steve Easterbrook replaced Don Thompson as CEO in January 2015. McDonald’s also implemented a big menu change by introducing all-day breakfast.
At the end of 2015, McDonald’s reported 36,525 locations around the world, with 14,259 of them inside the United States. The company expects to refranchise about 4,000 restaurants through 2016, and has a long-term goal to be 95 percent franchised.
