Wendy's is the third-largest burger chain in the world behind McDonald's and Burger King. Still based in Ohio, the chain is now overseen by the Wendy's Company, which also has partial ownership of the fast food chain Arby's.
At the end of 2015, the Wendy’s restaurant system comprised of 6,479 restaurants, 5,847 of which are franchised. From 2013 to 2015, Wendy’s decreased their total number of restaurants by 78.
In February 2015, the company announced plans to sell approximately 540 additional restaurants to franchisees and reduce its ongoing company-owned restaurant ownership to approximately 5 percent of the total system by the end of 2016. Wendy’s also plans to remodel at least 60 percent of its North American locations by 2020 year-end.
