From the beginning, the restaurant was conceived as a place specializing in breakfast food, particularly items like French toast and pancakes. Along with Applebee’s, the company is held and franchised by DineEquity (formerly the IHOP Corporation). As of 2015, IHOP had more than 1,600 U.S. locations, with 79 international units.
The company has recently jump-started its international expansion, with an agreement in 2013 with M.H. Alshaya Co. that allowed for the development of 40 restaurants across the Middle East and North Africa.
In November 2011, IHOP opened the first branch of IHOP Express, a concept that was originally tested in university campuses and military bases. The branch is focused on products that are suited for guests on the go and younger customers.
