Trade Secrets

by Nancy Weingartner

A behind-the-scenes look at the Vietnam/Indonesia franchise trade mission

There are superfluous things you'll learn on a trade mission to Vietnam and Indonesia that are side notes-the fun facts that make international travel so fascinating. But the true value of a U.S. Commercial Service-sponsored trip comes from the business matchmaking, the contacts with high-ranking officials in the countries visited and the invaluable information delivered by local industry experts. And don't discount the camaraderie and best-practices collected from the other trade mission participants. Celebrities bowled over by Original Soupman's tasty product line up to spoon-feed the concept to the public

Basketball legend Shaquille O'Neal has 24-Hour Fitness franchises, along with Five Guys Burger and Fries and a handful of others-"I don't like to brag about what I have," the 7'1", 375-lb., former all-star told us-so why invest and become the pitchman for The Original Soupman? CEO Lane Kofoed's family and farm assist in welcoming new franchisees into the fold

It's a 10-minute drive from Lane Kofoed's home to his office in Nampa, Idaho. Depending on the time of day, the only traffic jam he may encounter is from a sun-weathered farmer relocating his combine harvester from one corn field to the next, or youngsters out for a joy ride on their horses. There's no settling in comfortably for the evening until he rounds up one or two of his five kids to feed the horses and toss out bales of hay read more

Working to be Ship Shape

by Nancy Weingartner

Unishippers multi-unit franchisee Wanda Sieber is used to moving freight. Now she's investing real money in getting her employees to move-10,000 steps a day.

Matthew Karas had a full agenda the day his employer gave him a 10-pound bag of sugar to carry around, so he asked coworkers to use packing tape to attach it to his body, allowing him to have his hands free. Carrying around an extra 10-pounds for a day was the introduction to the 13-week wellness program multi-unit franchisees Wanda and Bill Sieber launched this summer for their Unishippers Green Bay office in Wiscon read more
