Nominations Open for Franchising Gives Back Awards

Published:

McDonald’s Archways to Opportunity program helped employee Yenis Blanco earn her high school diploma.

Speaking little to no English, Yenis Blanco came to the United States from El Salvador seven years ago and got her first job at franchisee Ron Gantt’s McDonald’s restaurant in Washington, D.C. Through the company’s Archways to Opportunity program she received her high school diploma during a ceremony at the restaurant in early 2017.

“With the help of McDonald's and her independent franchisee, Yenis was able to learn English as a second language and earn her high school diploma,” Lisa Schumacher, director of education strategies at McDonald’s, told Franchise Times last year. “Now five years later, she manages a large restaurant team and is pursuing higher education to become a law enforcement officer.”

Blanco’s story is one of several that helped McDonald’s Archways program win the Spirit of Franchising Award last year as part of the International Franchise Association’s Franchising Gives Back recognition. Now in its fourth year, the IFA and its Educational Foundation are seeking nominations that highlight the charitable efforts of franchisors, franchisees and industry suppliers. One winner in each of five categories—Spirit of Franchising, Newcomer, Enduring Impact, Support Our Veterans, Innovation and Impact—will receive a Gold award presented on stage during the Franchising Gives Back Celebration and Awards Dinner in Washington, D.C., on September 4.

Nominations are open now through June 15. For more information visit www.franchisinggivesback.org.
