H&R Block Appoints Jeff Jones, Former Uber Executive, as CEO

Jeff Jones, a former executive with Target Corporation and Uber, was named as H&R Block’s new CEO today. He will succeed Tom Gerke, who will continue to serve as interim president and CEO until October 9, 2017.

“I am honored and excited to be joining the H&R Block team," Jones said in a statement. "Block is a values-based brand focused on helping people and I look forward to advancing this storied company in its quest to provide a broader range of solutions to meet our clients’ needs.”

Jones was the chief marketing officer at Target Corporation from 2012 to 2016. He was then lured away from the post by San Francisco-based ride sharing service Uber to become the brand’s president, amid the company's fast growth and increasing public scrutiny.

He made headlines by stepping down from the role in March, saying his beliefs and leadership style were inconsistent with what he saw and experienced at Uber. H&R Block cited Jones’ ethical attributes as one reason for the hire.

“One of our core corporate values is ‘We Do the Right Thing.’ There are few people who embody this more than Jeff. He is a transformational leader, one who deeply understands today's consumer and knows how to drive results in large-scale operations,” Chairman of the Board Robert A. Gerard said in a statement.
