Alamo Drafthouse is Rare Theater to Enforce 'No Texting'
Tim League is founder and CEO of Alamo Drafthouse Cinemas.
Everybody who hates when people text at the movies (in other words, everybody over the age of 35) should check out Alamo Drafthouse Cinemas, a growing chain of movie theaters with restaurants that absolutely don’t allow it.
“We certainly experiment with all kinds of experiences that you can have within a darkened movie theater,” says founder and CEO Tim League. “But in general, we’re the industry leader in no talking, no texting. We kick people out if you violate the social contract.” I spoke with him recently because Alamo is one of our Fast & Serious companies that will be featured in the January issue of Franchise Times.
He believes the stance appeals to people of all ages. “We’re trying to build a polite, respectful movie-watching experience, and I don’t think that has an age limit on it. Alamo Drafthouse has produced a series of videos, featuring stars like Janeane Garofalo, the late Ann Richards, Kevin Bacon and Mark Hamill, instructing people not to talk and text, which you can see below.
