UFC Champ Edgar to Open New Jersey Gym
Frankie Edgar, who will fight in the UFC 200 in Vegas July 9, has signed on as a celebrity owner of a UFC Gym.
Frankie Edgar, the former UFC lightweight champion and current featherweight contender, will take his fighting skills to the business arena tomorrow for the grand opening of a signature UFC Gym in North Brunswick, New Jersey.
Edgar is a franchisee of the concept, which he says fits perfectly with his passion for UFC and will allow him to keep involved with the sport after his fighting days are over. “I’m 34. I haven’t put a number on it,” he told Franchise Times about when his retirement might come. “As long as my body holds up. But you have to be realistic and know that fighting only lasts so long and you have to transition to something after.”
Edgar is one of a select number of UFC athletes that UFC Gym is signing as owners, as a way to tap into the growing popularity of mixed martial arts fighting and training. UFC Gym began franchising in 2012, and today has 115 franchise locations and a dozen corporate-owned.
UFC fans know that Edgar is in the lineup to fight in Las Vegas on July 9 at the UFC 200. David Paris, a partner at Paris Ackerman & Schmierer who does legal work for UFC Gym and Edgar’s New Jersey deal, is a huge fan. The July 9 fight will be “monumental,” Paris says. “It will be on the card that is earmarked to garner the largest pay-per-viewership in UFC history.”
