How Crowded is Artisan Pizza Field? A Review

Published:

First there was the creation of Your Pie, in April 2008, founded by Drew French, at least according to No Limit Agency, Your Pie’s PR agency. (Every time someone claims a “first” in the choose-your-own-ingredients fast-casual pizza wars, someone else says it isn’t so.)

Then came MOD Pizza in fall 2008, Uncle Maddio’s in 2009, and then Pieology, Pie Five and Pizzeria Locale in 2011, according to a nifty new infographic from the agency that highlights just how crowded the field has become.

The next year, 2012, saw Blaze Pizza, The Pizza Studio, PizzaRev, Project Pie and 800 Degrees all open their first locations. Live Basil opened in 2013, with Chipotle Mexican Grill announcing a partnership in December 2013 with Pizzeria Locale, and thus adding muscle to the two-store brand.

As for store count, for now Your Pie is tied for the lead with 19, along with Pie Five, Uncle Maddio’s and Pieology. Blaze Pizza has 17, PizzaRev 16 and Project Pie 10. The final four are still in the single digits, topped by Pizza Studio with 7, Live Basil with 6, 800 Degrees with 4 and Pizzeria Locale with 2, according to No Limit.

In short, there’s no breakout brand yet, but plenty gunning to become it.
