Freshii Expands Down Under, Inks Walgreens Partnership

Freshii, the Toronto-based fast-casual brand with a focus on healthy eating, announced a master franchise agreement that will add 20 new locations in Australia. In addition, it has inked a new retail partnership with Walgreens, its second big-name non-traditional partnership after signing a similar deal to add locations within Target stores.

The first Australian store opened in October, with a total of 20 units planned to open by the end of 2017. Its first locations will be in Perth—a city of 1.8 million in Western Australia. Robbie Damjanovic is Freshii’s Australian master franchise holder, and he has extensive plans to bring Freshii to new locations throughout the country.

According to the release, this development will create more than 100 full- and part-time jobs. Additional locations are currently being negotiated across the country.

“We are thrilled to bring nutrition-packed food made quickly to the community,” Damjanovic said of his plans in Australia. “There has been a void in the fast food market here in Australia, and I predict guests will clamor to our energizing eats. I know Perth is ready to make friends with quinoa and kale and meet Freshii’s superfood-filled menu.”

Adam Corrin, Freshii COO—and brother of founder Matthew Corrin—said the company’s at a particularly fun stage of its development as it focuses on new U.S. and international partnerships, as well as new technological ventures, including a new mobile app that allows guests to place orders before arriving at the store.

Now up to 20 restaurants within Walgreens stores—a partnership announced earlier in 2016—Corrin said the company is currently adding a total of three units a week to its stable. By the end of 2016, he predicted there will be more than 300 Freshii locations across the globe in a total of 85 cities and 20 countries.

Corrin said the company wasn’t explicitly looking to enter the Australian market, but added Damjanovic reached out to the company and proved to be an excellent, ambitious partner to champion the brand in a new country.

Freshii’s next international market will be Peru, as Corrin said the company is planning to open its first location in Lima—the capital and largest city in the country.
