Phenix Salon Suites leads hair care franchises on our Top 200+ ranking this year in the personal care & services segment. Growing by 20.8 percent in sales with $86 million in 2019, Phenix Salon Suites ranks No. 346, though Great Clips still holds the highest hair rank of No. 81 on our list.
“Having Gina Rivera as the founder and face of our brand provides that connectivity to salon professionals that our other competitors don’t have,” said Brian Kelley, president and chief operating officer at Phenix. “We’ve been moving so fast and didn’t have a huge infrastructure in place, so our growth comes down to two things: people and process. We hired a few good high-quality people that have franchise development experience, as well as on the construction side.”
From one location in 2009 to growing to 260 units in 10 years, Kelley was brought on in 2019 to help negotiate favorable terms with landlords when developing. He also emphasized the accelerating trend of salon professionals wanting to “liberate themselves from a chair or booth rental and split commission structure and have their own business with four walls.” And now with COVID-19, private and secure environments are more important and relevant than ever.
“We’ve definitely seen an increase in salon professionals, most coming from open-air salons where the salon owner cut back their hours or had to cut back chairs to create space,” Kelley said. “We don’t have that problem, as we offer individualized suites so they can operate and control their secure environment with 24/7 access, so we’re in a pretty good spot right now.”
Kelley also added a project management tool that offers franchisees with locations under development guidance during each step of the process, from sign and lease to opening. About 30 locations are in development using the tool, which cuts down on development time and helps franchisees stay on track and within budget.
