Whimsy Cookie Steps Out to Texas Via Mother/Daughter Pair

Sharon Hicks and her daughter Sheridan Gleason were looking for a business they could do together, and they found Whimsy Cookie Co., a young franchise based in Memphis. Their first store is set to open in Southlake, Texas, a suburb of Dallas/Fort Worth, by the end of August/first of September.

“Texas is booming right now so it took a little longer to get a site” than they expected, says Gleason, the daughter half of the team along with her husband, Matt Gleason.

“I like to eat her baking, how’s that,” said Hicks when giving her reasons for buying into a franchise, for the first time. “I am a 30-year practicing attorney, and my husband and I have also owned businesses of our own,” she said, referring to Bill Hicks. “My daughter is a former teacher and she has had her own retail business as well.”

But the founder and co-owners of the franchise are a bigger draw: Laurie Suriff, who began baking custom cookies for her husband’s clients; Aaron Suriff, her husband and a former finance pro who now heads up franchise development for Whimsy; and Collins Tuohy, the marketing arm of the team and sister to Michael Oher, made famous by “The Blind Side”movie starring Sandra Bullock as Leigh Anne Tuohy, Collins’s and Oher’s mother. The Tuohys and Oher, who started placing regular orders when he played for the Baltimore Ravens, were instrumental in Whimsy’s early success, as reported in an upcoming story in Franchise Times.

Says Hicks about the founder/co-owners: “They have faith, family and Whimsy on their emails, and that means a lot to us,” she said.

They’re also looking at a site in Austin, Texas. “Yes, I’m going to be busy,” said Hicks, will will serve as CEO with Sheridan Gleason as COO.
