For Farmer Behind Franny’s Farmacy, ‘World Is Very Small’

Freshly home from a trip to Cuba where she talked and toured with farmers, Franny Tacy is on a mission to educate people worldwide how to grow hemp profitably and produce cannabinoid products derived from it with integrity. 

“I say growers beware,” said the co-founder of Franny’s Farmacy, a retail dispensary of cannabinoid products based in Asheville, North Carolina, when asked about reports of hemp rotting in the fields due to over-production since it was made legal in the 2018 U.S. Farm Bill. 

“Hemp will revitalize our agricultural economy, but we need to be growing hemp for more than just CBD production and medicinal purposes,” she said.

Tacy is the co-founder of Women in Hemp, and is participating in a university research study to collect data on the hemp plants grown in her fields and those who grow for her. “Franny’s Farm will be producing the first information on variety trials…for the first time since the 1920s,” she said. “It’s been a long, 70 almost 80 years since hemp prohibition.”Tacy is sought after as an expert in hemp. “I speak all over the country, and this time we’ll be expanding into international affairs, Peru, Cuba, China this summer. A big part of the legislative movement is getting this legalized, and where we go next, and protecting the consumer. We’re one of the leaders in transparency,” she said about Franny’s Farmacy, which has four corporate stores and five franchises sold. Cost to open a Franny’s Farmacy ranges from $110,000 to $140,000. 

 “Our products are all the way tracked right back to our farm and never leave oversight of our business. In an unregulated market, it’s very important to have a brand you can trust,” she said. “I’m a huge advocate for the consumer and for transparency and so is our company. We are there to be an example of how to do business with integrity.”

The United States is in the vanguard of hemp-for-CBD production, she believes, and she displays a breadth of knowledge on the topic.

“The No. 1 use of hemp in Europe is for animal feed. The No. 1 use of hemp in China is for fiber. As we move into Latin American countries, food is of critical importance and the medicinal properties,” she said.

“But every one of them no matter where they are, their sights are set on CBD and the medicinal purposes of this. Every one of them. They want access. And the U.S. and what we are doing” is leading the way. She also mentioned a trip to South Africa, where regulators are now offering permits to grow hemp for CBD. “This world is very small, is all I have to say.”

Tacy said she grew up on her father’s cattle farm. “I’ve always been part of a farm, and that was always my dream,” to own one, which she and her husband, Jeff Tacy, started as an agri-tourism operation before beginning their hemp production in 2017. 

What does she like about farming? “I love everything. I love the connection to the land, and I love that it is seasonal,” she said. “I love projects, and growing is a project. You plant a seed and you’re watching it flourish and grow all the way into a product.”

Also, it gives her killer arms, I say with a laugh, mentioning a photograph of her in her hemp fields. “I don’t even notice it,” she said, adding people say to her: “Girl, you’ve got muscles for miles. And I say yes, nothing like all that heavy lifting.”
