Fun Doesn't Cut it When Considering Franchises

Published:

Misty Young is a Rita's Italian Ice area developer in California and owner of the Squeeze In restaurant chain.

Calling all prospective franchisees: Misty Young, operator of the Squeeze In restaurant chain in California who is also executing a massive development agreement for Rita’s Italian Ice, wants you to get out of ‘la-la’ land and get serious about analyzing your business prospects.

“There’s so many people that get this ‘la-la’ look on their face and they say, ‘Oh, I’m going to have so much fun,” operating a franchise. “That’s not what it’s about. Yes, you might have fun, but you’re here to make money,” Young told this blogger in an engaging interview recently. “So take your pie in the sky and put it in your backpack, and get your business sense on.”

When she analyzes an opportunity, she looks at three elements. No. 1: Is there an appetite among consumers? Is there a good uptake? She says a survey last March asked which brand consumers would like to see go nationally, and Rita’s was No. 2.

No. 2 is simplicity of operations. She owns the Squeeze In chain of restaurants, which are full-service. “When I looked at Rita’s I thought, oh my god, there’s no chef” or other complications.

No. 3: Is it going to be profitable? Young’s full complement of advice, including how to figure potential profits, will be featured in the next issue of Franchise Times.
