Jiffy Lube Builds Teamwork One (Fast) Oil Change at a Time
We’ve heard of rope-climbing as an exercise to build team spirit at work, and ping pong-playing and wine-tasting and trampoline-jumping and even blow-drying (the hair, with colleagues, often while getting a pedicure.) But we hadn’t thought about oil-changing.
Jiffy Lube has, since that’s what its 1,500 stores do for a living. It just hosted the grand finale of its J-Team All Stars competition in Miami, crowning the West 7th Savages out of Eugene, Oregon, as its champion team.
Teams are narrowed down during several rounds of competition throughout the year, judged on teamwork, operational execution and customer experience skills as well as how quickly they perform an oil change.
The contest is the ultimate challenge for Jiffy Lube employees, who are required to participate in the Jiffy Lube University training program, and then can take all that training to the competition if they wish.
Judging by the exuberant high fives from the winning team, and the excitement over the appearance at the event by Helio Castroneves, Indycar driver and winner of season 5 Dancing with the Stars—this team-building experience beats monthly birthday parties in the break room, hands down.
