World Gym led the international fitness center charge into Pakistan in July, opening its first unit in the capital, Islamabad. Development partner, Jim Teatum, is also acting as advisor for a second facility being built in Egypt's October City. That gym is expected to open in summer 2015. Two other countries pumping up for World Gyms are Germany and Vietnam. In Germany, Gentil Dossche, the chain's development partner for Germany, Switzerland, Austria and Belgium, will oversee the conversion slated to open in fall 2014. Franchisees Tran Tien, Man Hung Nguyen, Henry and Stella Lam are construction a new facility Saigon, Vietnam to be opened at the end of this year. The Lam also have a World Gym franchise open in New Jersey and are building a new gym and converting two additional gyms on the U.S.'s East Coast.
QSR International, the master franchisee for Smashburger in Central America, the Caribbean and parts of South America, opened the first restaurant in a five-unit deal in Panama. Located in Panama City's Plaza New York, the restaurant seats 96 and employs 25. Franchisee Inversiones Platinum Brands S.A. is already a multi-unit operator of Wing Zone.
Partnering with Gold's Gym, New Orleans-based Planet Beach is opening an automated spa in Cairo, Egypt. The spa industry in Egypt is booming, the company says, but most spas are located in four- or five-star hotels, which makes Planet Beach's location inside the gym more affordable, according to a press release by Planet Beach. Battoul Shamsi is the director of Planet Beach Cairo and will help open additional spas.
Tianjin Zeng Yi Real Estate Brokerage Co., owned by Plus Investment Holding Group in Beijing, will open Hainan Sotheby's International Realty in China. The real estate office is expected to open in November. There are currently 27 independently owned and operated offices through out Asia, Australia and New Zealand.
