The usually white-hot healthcare segment cooled last year, with sales up a mere 6 percent compared to 14.5 percent the year before. Senior care franchises make up 16 of the 21 franchises on our ranking, with all the rest being a category of one. Lower sales gains were posted across the board, with FirstLight Home Care, No. 1 in the sector, reporting a 16.2 percent gain compared with 23.3 percent the year before. Only three other senior care franchises—BrightStar Care, Homewatch CareGivers and Synergy HomeCare reported double- digit gains versus nine that did so the year before. And one brand, Interim HealthCare, showed a 2.8 percent decline in sales after increasing by 6.4 percent the year before. What gives? Senior care franchisors routinely say they are in the space because of the coming silver tsunami as the U.S. population ages, but that demographic fact will not treat all players equally. “This next five years is going to be filled with opportunity and for some, potentially some risk,” said Charlie Young, the new CEO since April of Synergy Home Care, who has a background in real estate. “There are currently 62 to 65 companies franchising in the homecare space. You’re going to see a lot of movement and a lot of change.” Both BrightStar Care and HomeWatch CareGivers boosted sales by more than 11 percent, with BrightStar’s feat even more impressive given it’s triple the size. Shelly Sun, co-founder of BrightStar and one of the pioneers in the space, started with one corporate location in 2005 and last year marked 319 units generating $483 million in sales. Jennifer Tucker, COO of HomeWatch CareGivers, credits her brand’s move into claims based care, meaning Medicaid, Medicare Advantage and Veterans Administration programs that are government reimbursed. “We have some large locations that are rock stars in this space,” and she formed a Navigator Program with five of those franchisees. They help other franchise operators access government- backed payment sources, a complicated endeavor, and are compensated by the franchisor for that work.
