Top Home Services Franchises

Fixer uppers

By Beth Ewen

Home improvement franchises dominate the home services category, comprising 13 companies in all, but lawn care, plumbing, electrical, painting and more contribute as well. Pest control makes a mark, too, with Mosquito Squad (No. 361) just edging out Mosquito Joe at No. 362. Mosquito Joe beats out its rival, though, with a 28.5 percent sales increase, 10 points higher. Last year was Mosquito Joe’s first under the Neighborly umbrella, which President Lou Schager cited as a key to success. “We do have a great marketing plan, and joining Neighborly, they’ve been able to amplify that across their platforms, to introduce Mosquito Joe across the country,” he said. A push into California, the last frontier for the Virginia Beach, Virginia-based brand, was also made possible by Neighborly’s reach.

Ups & Downs

By Beth Ewen

Franchises in the residential real estate business posted the best of times last year— if you were United Real Estate or Realty One Group, with double- digit sales increases—or the worst of times, for G.J. Gardner Homes and Epcon Homes & Communities, down 3 percent and 20.6 percent, respectively. All four concepts are on the smaller end of the eight-brand spectrum. The biggest players reported modest increases: RE/ MAX was up 3.8 percent, noteworthy given it’s a $10.42 billion brand in systemwide sales. Berkshire Hathaway Home Services, at $3.07 billion, pushed up sales 3 percent. Keller Williams Realty, with $8.9 billion, managed a 1.6 percent increase. Dan Duffy, CEO of United Real Estate, attributed his company’s 33.6 percent sales increase to a robust technology platform rolled out in late 2018. He calls it a lead generation machine. “We own and operate nearly 6,000 websites that drive 600 million page views a month and about 4 million unique visitors will visit one of our websites,” he said.
